Day 51: What no bananas?

I'm a big fan of bananas and in the past I've drawn them with some success; for some reason their cuboid shape creates excellent shadows while the mottling of ripeness adds interesting texture. So with quite a bit more shading experience under my belt now I figured that I'd re-visit this old favourite:

Previously I've made my shadows a little too dominant (even though they're often the darkest areas) and so today I focused on keeping the blackest tones within the object itself. In this case that meant outlining the ripest areas and trying to show how the top of the banana was lit most intensely. In the event I figured that I could do this be setting a base tone and then selectively erasing the brightest spots:

Unfortunately this didn't work out as I'd hoped. The top face of the banana is qualitatively different to the face in shadow both in terms of colour and luminosity; neither of which I managed to draw out. Some of the detail is quite nice, and I'm glad that the edges are rough in a way that feels right, but I could have done better.
