There's a lot of pollen about in the summer and unfortunately my son suffers from asthma; so we always have an inhaler somewhere about. Luckily it makes quite a nice object to draw with its curves, straight lines and shadows:
For fun, and because I'm using more ink at the moment, I decided to sketch the inhaler in pencil and ink pen at the same time to see how the results compared. I did this partially to compare the two mediums but also to see if I'd achieve a similar result when drawing the same object twice. My technique isn't so accurate that I can achieve repeatability but still I'd like to see some similarities! Anyway I used a pencil outline for both sketches and then looked for the areas of deepest shadow to set the overall tone; if these are dark enough then they set off the rest of the picture:
The results make an interesting contrast I think in that the pencil drawing shows the smooth curves of the plastic body while ink sets out the abstract shapes of the case and the way in which they come together. I'm not sure that either drawing is satisfying in its own right but I do like that way in which they highlight different characteristics; still need to work on my drafting accuracy though!
