We're camping, as a family, at the moment and anyone who's spent time in a tent will know that it gets pretty dark at night. So a torch is essential if you don't want to fall in a hole while stumbling around outside in the gloom! Fortunately I picked up a new, LED torch just before we departed and it's a substantial piece of kit:
What's nice about it, from an art perspective, is that its case features nicely textured areas and a number of exact geometric shapes that are pleasing to draw. So I propped it up on one end and tried to pick out an outline in proportion; this is where practice at drawing straight lines comes in handy! Anyhow with an outline in place I decided that there was no point adding shading to such a dark object - I'd have to find what texture there was on the smooth surface and be happy with that:
Talking of texture it was clear from my observation that the grip lines curved and hinted at the shape of the torch. So I tried to get these approximately right and to ensure that the ellipses of the case didn't slope down on one side or the other. It's surprisingly difficult to get this bit right, and I used my rubber a lot, but if the ends of your ellipses aren't on the same line horizontally then it throws off the whole picture. Sadly the picture still looks a bit incomplete, in my view, but it's all a learning experience!
